A Trip To Sabhan Factories

The Department of Family Sciences, College for Women had recently arranged a field trip for the students taking courses in Microbiology and Food Microbiology with Prof. Dr. Jiwan Sidhu to visit four food processing factories in the Sabhan industrial area.

During this educational tour, the students visited four factories, namely Petra Trading & Manufacturing Foodstuff Est, Kuwait-Indo Trading Company (KITCO), Sara Cakes and Confectionery, and FoodStuff Industries Co. (FICO). The students were explained about the various processing steps involved in food manufacture as well as the quality control measures being taken by these companies to produce safe and nutritious foods for the Kuwait consumers.

The students realized the amount of hard work that goes into the production of such a variety of foods by the local food industries. Some of the foods were shown to be very good sources of valuable vitamins, minerals and dietary fiber. The students also acknowledged that apart from nutritive value, taste was one of the most important food attributes for the popularity of these food products.

Finally, at the end of field trip, the students expressed their happiness and appreciation of acquiring such a valuable exposure to scientific and practical information that will help them to relate the microbiology courses they are studying at the College for Women, Kuwait University to their real life situations involving the practical aspects of food selection from among the various processed foods available in Kuwaiti market.
