Food Technologist from Kuwait Flour Mills Visits College for Women

 

Ms. Ebtihal Al-Salem, Manager, Food Laboratories at Kuwait Flour Mills and Bakeries Company was invited to speak to the students, faculty and staff members of College for Women on 9th April 2006 about the food processing activities of KFM and the job opportunities available to Food Science graduates in local food processing industries. Dr. Jiwan Sidhu, Chairman, Family Sciences Department, while welcoming the guest speaker informed the audience that the Kuwait Flour Mills & Bakeries Co. (KFM) is one of the largest food processing industries in the State of Kuwait. To a well attended lecture, Ms. Ebtihal highlighted various food processing operations related to flour milling, bakery foods, cooking oils, pasta products, cattle feeds, and food quality control through a 20 minutes video presentation. She commended the efforts of College for Women for having started the degree programs in Food Science and Nutrition in the country. Earlier the local food industry has to recruit food science and nutrition graduates from foreign countries, but now the graduates of this college will meet these needs of the food industry in the coming times. She emphasized that the food science a very broad field comprising of food chemistry, food analysis, food microbiology, food engineering, food biotechnology, quality control, food safety and sanitation, food processing and new food product development. Evidently, the local food industry in Kuwait will be greatly benefited from the food science and nutrition graduates coming out of the College for Women as the local industry is in dire need of trained food science and nutrition graduates. She opined that there will be major expansion in food processing industry in the coming years and thus a very bright future awaits our graduates. The present annual intake of food science and nutrition graduates needs to be enhanced to at least thirty. At the end of video presentation, students asked a number of questions to the guest speaker. In the concluding remarks, Dr. Sana BuHamra, Dean, College for Women presented a plaque to Ms. Ebtihal Al-Salem and stressed the importance of having extensive interaction with the local food industry for the benefit of our society.
